Fee for Service and Managed Care coverage are the two different types of health insurance available in Scottsdale, Arizona. Each plan offers something different when it comes to health care provisions, they however both cover the typical health care claims, such as surgical, medical and hospital related expenses. The Fee for Service and Managed Care both cover prescription drugs and often times it will go as far as offering dental coverage.
As mentioned above there are two different types of Scottsdale Health insurance, these are Fee for Service and Managed Care.

  1. Fee for Service or Indemnity

Fee for service basically is health coverage plan that is more geared towards the policy holder. In this type of plan the policy holder determines which doctor they want to receive their health care from. In this type of coverage if a health service is needed then once it is done and paid for then a claim is the submitted to the insurance company. Depending what is covered under the health insurance policy, then the insurance company will reimburse the policy holder back the money he had paid.

Advantage – The benefits of this type of plan is the power is more in the policy hand. The policy holder will be able to choose the health care professional of their choice. Disadvantage – under this plan the policy will pay a higher deductible or copay compared to managed care plans.

  1. Managed Care

The Managed Care plan that exists under Scottsdale health insurance works with the policy holder paying a fixed fee for the year. This fee entitles the health care provider to manage the care of the individual. This means they make all decisions including which physicians or specialist they are able to go to. There are three different types of health insurance plans under Scottsdale health insurance, these are health maintenance organizations (HM0s), preferred provider organizations (PPOs) and point-of-service (POS) plans

  • Health Maintenance Organizations (HMO)
  • Preferred Provider Organizations (PPO)
  • Point-of-Service (POS) plans

Health Maintenance Organizations (HMO)

In Scottsdale Arizona health insurance HMOs offer prepaid, comprehensive health coverage for both hospital and physician services. The HMO will enter into contract with different health care providers who provide different services. Hence you will have physicians, hospitals and other healthcare professionals. This is what is known as a provider network.

If you are a member of an HMO then you will have restrictions. These restrictions will not allow you to choose or visit a health care professional if they do not exist in the HMO’s provider network. If you go for health care outside of the network the HMO will not pay for the service and it will be an out of pocket expense for you.

In Scottsdale health insurance the HMO works by contracting specific health care providers such as doctors, hospitals, physicians and others that provide health services. All of these become under contract with the HMO and this is what is known as the provider network.

As a member of the HMO you will also have to choose your main doctor. This is what is known as a Primary Care Physician (PCP). This physician belongs to the provider network and will become the doctor that will be responsible for everything. The PCP is known as a gatekeeper and he controls all aspects of the health plan. If the member needs to see a specialist, then the PCP will refer the specialist. If the member goes out of network then the HMO will not pay.

Many people do not like HMOs as they feel they are very restrictive and that members are tied to the network. The benefits are greater with this type of plan and the costs are the lowest with managed health care plans. If members do go outside of networks, they will have no benefits and are left to bare the cost.

Preferred Provider Organizations (PPO)

Scottsdale health insurance has a type of managed care health plan called Preferred Provider Organizations or PPO. The managed plan works where patients can receive medical services from the PPOs private network and participating providers. They also have the option of choosing to have medical services outside the private network. This means they are not restricted but the cost will be much higher.

Similar in some ways to an HMO, the PPO differs as the member is able to get medical services outside of the network. This means that they are not restricted and are free to do as they please. The negative to this kind of agreement is the fact that if you do decide to go out of network the benefits will be less. Sometimes the cost maybe be 70% coverage. To entice members to get services within the network, the PPO often times has extra benefits such as lower deductibles, lower co-payments and higher reimbursements. This will encourage members to stay within the network to receive benefits.

Scottsdale health insurance has a wide array for managed care plans. The PPO to some people is one of the best as it offers the best of both worlds. Compared to the HMO it gives almost the same benefits but not as restrictive. This means they are not restricted as to where they can go for medical services and even if they do, they will have some amount of coverage.

Point of Service (POS)

Scottsdale health insurance has a managed care plan called Point of Service or (POS). This type of plan is similar to an HMO where the member is allowed to choose doctors, physicians and health specialists from within the network. The members are not limited to choosing from the network, they can all go outside the network to receive the specific services that they need.

The POS requires members to choose a Primary Care Physician (PCP). This is not a must, as members can choose providers outside of the network.  However if the do decide to go this route, then they would be charged higher deductibles and copayments.

This type of plan under Scottsdale, Arizona health insurance is becoming a very popular choice. You have all the benefits of the HMO, but you are not restricted to the private network and can seek medical help outside.
